What’s This Sketchbreak Business?

The idea behind Sketchbreak is to encourage you to slow down and notice the world around you through drawing, sketching, or doodling. What you produce doesn’t have to be “good” (though we will certainly help you improve). It just has to be uniquely yours.

What should I draw?

Good question. You can cull your subjects from a variety of sources: coffee shops (that perennial favorite), malls, family photos, stock photos, YouTube videos, junk mail catalogs, imagination. You might even want to pause your current Netflix show and capture what you see on screen.

What if I don’t have time?

Take as little or as much time as you want. There are no rules here. Some days, you might only have 5 minutes to draw what you had for lunch. Other days, you could have time for a full page spread of your trip to the farmer’s market. We encourage you to take what time you can, when you can, to observe your world, to draw what you see, and to have fun doing it.

  • Quick tips. Drawing prompts and reference ideas, challenges, and little tricks to get your sketches going.
  • Full tutorials. We walk you step-by-step through full sketch spreads, focusing on how to lay out your page, techniques to try, and how to power through the self-doubt.
  • Gear and supply suggestions. We only recommend the tools that we use ourselves. If we haven’t used a pen, sketchbook, or other gear, it won’t make its way onto this list.
  • Artist interviews. We talk with the talented folks we admire, learn about how they got started, get insight into their process, and see some of their work.
  • Online courses. For beginners or seasoned sketchers, our structured courses teach you everything you need to start and keep a sketchbook practice, or get even better at what you’re already doing.
